Let’s be honest: by the time our stags and hens reach their stag or hen party nights the only test of skill they’ll be undertaking is whether they can down their own bodyweight in alcohol and still stand upright. Nothing wrong in that, but wouldn’t it be good to spend the part of the day that doesn’t involve tequila doing something that’s really easy to pick up, but takes real skill to master?

Something that’s a real challenge, but real fun too? A test of skill, of aim and of trying to get through a whole day of pretending to be Robin Hood without once breaking into cheesy Bryan Adams ballads?

Our archery weekend gives a chance for stags, hens and their parties to aim for Olympic glory. Or, if you’re not taking it that seriously, to just pretend you’re Robin Hood or Maid Marian without actually having to rob from the rich, give to the poor, and finance a bunch of dubious forest-dwelling hangers-on known for their general merriness.

Of course archery technology has moved on a bit since medieval times so your stag or hen archery weekend won’t include lessons on how to craft your bow from saplings, won’t require you to gut a cat and won’t require stags or hens to stand nervously against a tree whilst one of your own merry men tries to shoot an apple off your head.

It will, however, test your nerve and skill as you stand before the archery target, aiming at the bull’s eye (known as, and coloured, gold), the string taut against your chin and your muscles straining. You control your breathing, let the string roll off your fingers and let the arrow fly. At up to 240km/h the arrow you’ve just released powers towards the archery target and either punches it’s way into the gold, one of the outer rings coloured red, blue, black and white or misses completely and takes out an unsuspecting cow in the adjoining field. The feeling of hitting the gold will have you punching the air as your party recognises your mastery of archery and crowns you king or queen of the hen or stag archery weekend. Taking out the cow in the adjoining field probably won’t have quite the same effect.

Starting with the gold, the circles have point values of 9, 7, 5, 3, and 1*. The winner of the hen or stag archery weekend is the person with the highest score.

The instructors tell us that the majority of stags and hens think they can't hit the target, but with limited tuition and a few practice shots, most people are hitting the archery target on a regular basis and achieving pretty good scores. Mastering archery though, will take a little longer, and that’s the challenge as you battle to amass the most points to win your stag or hen archery weekend and bragging rights later at your party night.
